ETHNOGRAPHIC, LINGUISTIC AND LANGUAGE POLICY IN TRANSCARPATHIA, UKRAINE

During her visit to three villages in Zakarpats'ka oblast' of Ukraine, in the Carpathian mountains. Dr. Boudovskaia collected linguistic data, but was also interested in the everyday life of the inhabitants. Their stories about the past shed light on the changes this region is currently undergoing and the problems it faces. The presentation will concentrate on two topics: 1. Language spoken in rural areas of Zakarpats'ka oblast' of Ukraine: Ukrainian dialect or minority language? 2. Traditional values and the realities of the post-Soviet life: Economics, family, gender roles, ethics, morals.
